Applying

Have you decided on an education in Melbourne or the state of Victoria?

Apply for entry

After you choose your preferred course and institution, you must formally apply for admission.

First, complete an application form from the institution where you wish to study. Request or download application forms from the institution’s website. Many colleges and universities ask you to lodge your application online.

The application form will ask which course you wish to study. It will also ask for your second and third preference of course at the same institution. If you are applying for courses at more than one institution, you will need to submit a separate application to each institution.

It is usual to include copies of the following documents with your application:

  • Certificates that verify your previous study, including qualifications you already have
  • Evidence of your English language proficiency through an IELTS, TOEFL or OET test
  • Certificates or documents which verify previous study or work experience if you’re seeking course credits These must be translated into English.

There are two ways to apply:

  1. Contact the institution directly. Institutions employ staff to help international students, so the process is made as easy as possible; or
  2. Ask a registered Australian education agent in your country to help with your application and visa. Australian Embassies and Diplomatic Posts in your country can provide a list of registered Australian education agents near you.

Check that you meet the Australian Government’s requirements for a student visa before you apply to study.

Processing your application

Each institution assesses applications on a case-by-case basis. If you apply online, many institutions allow you to check the progress of your application on their website.

If your application is successful, you will receive a ‘Letter of Offer’, to which you must respond. When the institution has received your reply, you will be sent an ‘Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment’ by email. This is important because your visa will not be granted without it.

Check that you meet the Australian Government’s requirements for a student visa before you accept your offer and pay tuition fees.

After you formally accept and confirm your enrolment, the institution will send an information package with more details about your course. This will tell you when you should arrive, what to bring, arrangements for your welcome, accommodation options and important events you should attend, such as orientation days.
