Frequently Asked Questions
Is Melbourne safe?
Melbourne and Victoria is not only liveable, it's also friendly and safe.
When you're in a new city, however, there are key things to do to help keep safe, particularly at night.
- Whenever possible travel in groups
- Keep valuables out of sight and stay aware of surroundings when travelling on public transport
- Travel in the front carriage of the train, nearest the driver, when the train is relatively empty.
- Check public transport timetables in advance to help avoid long waits on platforms. If you do have to wait, stay in well-lit areas or near open shops
- Walk in well-lit areas even if it means walking a longer distance
- Avoid short cuts through dark isolated areas
- If you feel threatened in any way while walking on the street, go to a shop or house with its lights on (if at night) and ask that police be contacted
