Climate
Victoria has four distinct seasons. It's often said Melbourne has all four seasons in one day!
Weather forecasters called November 2009 one of the strangest months they’ve seen, because it combined record high temperatures (10 consecutive days above 30 degrees) with above-average rainfall. And in December, to mark the start of summer, we had chilly days and rain. That’s Melbourne for you!
Here’s a sample five-day period from December 2009:
Monday Sunny 15°C - 21°C Tuesday Sunny 13°C - 32°C Wednesday Windy 19°C - 39°C Thursday Rain developing 19°C - 23°C Friday Clearing shower 12°C - 21°C
Summer is December to February (average temperature 25ºC), while winter is June to August (average temperature 14ºC).
Summers can have very hot days with temperatures in the high 30s, but winters are generally cool to cold. It doesn’t snow in Melbourne, but does in the mountains a few hours drive away.
