Legal Advice

It can be challenging to navigate laws and the legal system in a new country.  How do you find out about your rights as an international student?  Who do you speak to about visa concerns, or legal matters to do with work, housing and school?

Head straight to the International Student Legal Advice Clinic (ISLAC) at The Couch. Located in the heart of the city, The Couch – International Student Centre is a safe and free space for international students to socialise, relax, study, find support and get information about living in Melbourne. On Wednesday evenings, ISLAC  provides free legal advice at the centre.

Supported by the Western Suburbs Legal Service, ISLAC is staffed by volunteer lawyers and migration agents who have experience working with international students. Drop in at The Couch on a Wednesday evening to discuss any legal issues you may have (an appointment is not necessary). Or if you can't come on a Wednesday evening call 9391 2944 to make an appointment with ISLAC at a more convenient time. Be sure to bring your visa and relevant documents with you.

If you're keen to understand the law better, come along to the ISLAC's 'Legal Beagles World Series @ The Couch' sessions.  At these monthly quiz show events participants enjoy a free meal, learn about relevant laws (including rights at work and rental rights) and win prizes in a lively atmosphere.
