Chinese heritage
In the early 1880s a large number of Chinese diggers arrived in Ballarat to seek their fortune in the gold rush.
Conditions for these miners were difficult but when the gold rush ended, many remained and turned to other work such as market gardening. They established their place in local society and some descendants of these early immigrants still live in the Ballarat area.
Every year Sovereign Hill and the Chinese Australian Cultural Society Ballarat present an exciting day of traditional activities during Chinese New Year.
