Schools
The Victorian commitment to quality education starts young. From primary to secondary, our school system is one of the most advanced in the world. Students attend school for six hours a day, five days a week.
Many students come from other countries, particularly in senior school years, to take advantage of the high levels of teaching and outstanding results achieved in Victoria’s government, Catholic and Independent schools. It is a great way to acquire the education and English language skills for further study in Victoria and abroad.
During senior years 11 and 12, students work towards the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). This is the official government secondary qualification, considered for entry to universities in Australia, and overseas. Many Victorian schools also offer the International Baccalaureate, an internationally recognised secondary school qualification.
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is an option for students who prefer more practical, work related study options. Students can study for vocational education and training certificates, to gain credit toward further education and training in disciplines from business to design and hospitality.
Teachers are highly qualified and have experience working with students whose first language is not English. There are separate girls’ schools, boys’ schools and co-educational schools. All promote a healthy balance between academic, cultural, social and sporting activities, with well-developed support systems for international students.
