Australian universities were ranked number 1 in the world by the independent Lisbon Council. In Victoria there are nine publicly funded universities and many high quality private higher education providers to choose from. Campus life
International students have a well established and thoroughly integrated presence on all campuses. Campus life is relaxed. Most students live off-campus, though some live in halls of residence. Libraries are busy meeting places. Many universities also have cafeterias, shops, banks, theatres, clubs and societies on campus.
Studying in Melbourne and Victoria is challenging, but also a rewarding and well-rounded education experience. Our universities encourage independent thought, and as a student you are able to control your own study program. Universities provide on-going support for international students, and most major campuses have international student support advisors and drop-in centres. Teachers are available to discuss study-related issues.
Course work
Core course material is given in lectures. This material is then discussed in smaller tutorials. Science, technology and psychology subjects also involve laboratory work. Assessment is mostly by written assignment and examination.
Degrees usually take three years to complete, although some, like Law and Medicine take longer. You may be offered the opportunity to do a further Honours year, which will involve more course work, research and an Honours thesis.

Universities with TAFE
RMIT University, Swinburne University, the University of Ballarat and Victoria University are dual-sector institutions. This means they have both a university and a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) division. Dual-sector institutions offer both higher education and vocational education and training (VET) courses to study. Transfer of course credits between these VET and higher education courses allows flexible pathways into higher education.
