Applications for the 2020 Victorian International Education Awards are now closed.


The Victorian International Education Awards are an initiative of the Victorian Government to support the international education sector and raise awareness of the sector’s benefits to the broader community.

Now more than ever, it’s important we celebrate the change-makers in our communities.

As the pandemic continues to change our lives in innumerable ways, we want to showcase the outstanding students and alumni in our communities along with the many providers working hard to support the international student community.

This year there are Student and Provider Award categories. Find out more about each of the categories below.

Student prizes

Award winners in each category, with the exception of the International Alumnus of the Year, are awarded $6,000 and up to two runners-up per category are awarded $2,000 each.

All finalists and winners will receive a certificate of recognition.

The recipient of the ‘Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year’ will receive an additional $10,000 to be used for their studies.

All award winners will automatically become part of the Study Melbourne Ambassador program in 2021.

Provider prizes

Award winners are awarded with a trophy and provided with an email signature banner, to include on all their emails promoting that they are a winner in the Victorian International Education Awards.

The recipient of the ‘Premier’s Award – International Provider of the Year’ will receive a trophy and will be recognised as the most outstanding Provider of this Year.

Award categories and assessment criteria

The 2020 VIEA will feature Student and Provider Awards and Premier’s Awards.

There are seven Student Awards and seven Provider Awards that you can apply for. Expand each section for the category details, such as assessment criteria.

Student Awards

International Student of the Year – English Language Training

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying an English Language course that runs for a minimum of 20 weeks.

Applicants must have demonstrated outstanding improvement and contributed to the internationalisation of their institution.

Assessment criteria

These are the criteria and what you need to show to meet them.

Criterion 1: Community involvement (70%)

  • Demonstrate contribution and connection to the Victorian and global communities.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

Criterion 2: Academic achievements (30%)

  • Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.
  • Provide a description of how your studies will assist you in achieving your career goals.
  • Include messages that could encourage others who are interested in studying in Victoria.

International Student of the Year – Higher Education

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework-based program at a Victorian education provider.

Applicants must demonstrate how they have contributed to the internationalisation of their institution, the broader Victorian community and academic achievements.

Criterion 1: Community involvement (60%)

  • Demonstrate contribution and connection to the Victorian and global communities.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide an example of your leadership skills.

Criterion 3: Academic achievements (10%)

  • Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.

  • Include messages that could encourage others who are interested in studying in Victoria.

International Student of the Year – Research

This Award will be presented to an international student who has been pursuing a postgraduate research program either at Masters (by Research) or Doctoral level.  

Applicants must demonstrate how they have contributed to the internationalisation of their institution, the broader Victorian community and academic achievements.

  • Demonstrate contribution and connection to the Victorian and global communities.

International Student of the Year – Regional

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying at a Victorian education provider outside the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Applicants must demonstrate how they have contributed to the internationalisation of their institution, the broader Victorian community and academic achievements.

This Award will be presented to an international student who is undertaking a VET course.

Applicants must demonstrate how they have contributed to the internationalisation of their institution, the broader Victorian community and academic achievements.

This Award will be presented to a domestic student studying an accredited course at a Victorian education provider.

Applicants must have actively and effectively supported the engagement of international students with the broader Victorian community

  • Demonstrate your contribution and connection to the Victorian and/or global community.

International Alumnus of the Year

This Award will be presented to an alumnus of a Victorian educational institution who studied as an international student.

Applicants must have used their student experience and education to maintain links and create benefits to Victoria through business, volunteering or community networks.

Criterion 1: Entrepreneurial achievements (60%)

  • Describe your achievements and include recognition of entrepreneurial or innovative activity.
  • Describe your involvement and contribution to promote Victoria and your institution.

Criterion 2: Leadership skills (30%)

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide an example of your leadership skills.

Criterion 3: Academic achievements (10%)

  • Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.

Premier's Award – International Student of the Year

The Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year will recognise the most outstanding candidate for this year.

Nominees for other awards will automatically be considered as candidates, so this award does not require an application.

Recipients of the Premier’s Award will help promote the State as a leading international student destination.

Providers Awards

Excellence in International Student Experience

About this award

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in enhancing the experience of international students beyond academic support or providing opportunities for broader awareness of the value international students bring to Victorian communities, or engagement with the Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations and services for international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrated outcomes which enhance the experience of international students in Victoria (50%)

  • How has the initiative(s) enhanced the experience of international students in Victoria, beyond academic support?
  • What were the impacts of the initiative(s)?
  • In what ways have international students been provided with opportunities that increase a broader level of engagement and integration with the Victorian community?

Criterion 2: Excellence in delivery of the service (25%)

  • How do you identify student needs and expectations, and use this to enhance the experience of international students?
  • How do you demonstrate excellence in the delivery of service?
  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance.

Criterion 3: Demonstrated innovation which enhances the experience of international students in Victoria (25%)

  • Please describe any innovative initiative(s) that you have implemented to enhance the experience of international students in Victoria?

Excellence in International Student Employability and Career Development

About this award

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated excellence or innovation in employability and careers services to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations that service international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrated outcomes which enhance employability and career development of international students in Victoria (50%)

  • How has the excellent service provided, or initiative(s) enhanced the employability and career development of international students in Victoria?
  • What were the impacts of this service or initiative(s) in improving the employability and career development of international students in Victoria?
  • In what ways have international students in Victoria been provided with opportunities that enhance their employability and career development?

Criterion 2: Excellence in delivery of the service (25%)

  • How do you identify student needs and expectations, and use this to enhance the experience of international students?

Criterion 3: Demonstrated innovation which has enhanced employability and career development of international students in Victoria (25%)

Excellence in Innovation in Partnerships and International Engagement

About this award

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in collaborative international partnerships, that benefits the education sector.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legally constituted or appropriately accredited education provider (CRICOS number is not required);
  • Organisations may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the collaborative international partnerships of the organisation in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrate outcomes delivered through the collaborative international partnerships (50%)

  • Describe the outcomes delivered and explain why they demonstrate excellence.
  • Describe how reciprocal outcomes have been measured and evaluated.

Criterion 2: Excellence in development and conduct of the international partnerships (25%)

  • Please provide details of the collaborative international partnerships you have undertaken.
  • How have you demonstrated excellence in developing and conducting the partnerships?
  • Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance.

Criterion 3: Demonstrate excellence in innovation through the delivery of the collaborative international partnerships (25%)

Excellence in International Education – TAFE

About this award

This award will be presented to a Victorian TAFE provider that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a TAFE experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider (CRICOS number is required);
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrated outcomes which contribute to the Victorian international education sector (50%)

  • Please describe your strategy and methodology in delivering education to international students.

Criterion 2: Excellence in delivery of international education (25%)

Excellence in International Education – Private Education and Training

About this award

This award will be presented to a Victorian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a private RTO experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

(Note: this will include consideration where required that the institution is CRICOS registered and has no adverse findings held against it by relevant regulators).

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrate outcomes which contribute to the Victorian international education sector (50%)

  • Please describe your strategy and methodology in delivering education to international students.

Criterion 2: Excellence in delivery of international education (25%)

  • Be legislated by the Victorian Government to operate as a university in Victoria (CRICOS number is required);
  • A university may have operations and activities in more than one State, however, only the operation and activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Demonstrated outcomes which contribute to the Victorian international education sector (50%)

  • Describe your strategy and methodology in delivering education to international students in Victoria.

Eligibility criteria for all awards

To apply for any award, you will need to meet these criteria.

  • If you’re applying for the English Language Training, Vocational Education and Training, Higher Education, Research or Regional category, you must be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider.
  • If you’re applying for the Alumnus category, you must have graduated from an accredited Victorian education provider.
  • If you’re applying for the Internationalisation category, you must be currently enrolled in an accredited course as a domestic student at a Victorian education provider.
  • You agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, and support Study Melbourne marketing activities as required.
  • You agree to the full terms and conditions.

Preparing to apply

To apply, you will need to register online and submit your application and supporting materials. You can submit one entry per category.

Documents needed

  • written submission of how you meet the assessment criteria for the category you are applying for. You can write about 800-1,200 words per criterion. Each point per criterion allows a maximum of 400 words.
  • two referees who agree to be contacted for further information if needed—we will need their names and contact details
  • Students - a headshot photograph to use for Study Melbourne’s marketing purposes.
  • Providers – a logo and photograph of the institution to use for Study Melbourne’s marketing purposes.
