The Victorian International Education Awards are an initiative of the Victorian Government to support the international education sector, promote best practice in the sector, and raise awareness of its benefits to the broader community.

The 2018 VIEAs will included the two main categories of Student Awards and Provider Awards, and the relevant Premier’s Awards.

Student award categories

The Student awards will feature the following seven awards:

International Student of the Year - English Language Training

International Student of the Year – VET

International Student of the Year – Higher Education

International Student of the Year – Research

International Student of the Year – Regional

Victorian Student of the Year – Internationalisation

International Student of the Year - English Language Training

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying an English Language course of a minimum of 20 weeks and has demonstrated outstanding improvement and contributed to the internationalisation of their institution.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Outstanding improvement in your English

  • Describe the reason why you choose to come to study English in Victoria
  • Description of your English studies and improvement to date

Criterion 2: Ability to Represent Victoria

  • Describe how you would be an effective advocate for Victoria
  • Any messages you might have that could encourage others who are interested in Studying in Victoria.

In your application, you also need to include:

  • Names and contact details of two referees who agree to be contacted to provide further information on the nomination; and
  • A photo and permission for it to be used for marketing purposes

International Student of the Year – VET

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an international student who is undertaking a VET course and has demonstrated outstanding achievement in their studies and contributed to the internationalisation of their institution and the broader Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Academic Achievements

  • Description of your studies and academic achievements to date
  • Describe how your studies will assist you in achieving your career goals

Criterion 2: Community Involvement

  • Description of your involvement and achievements in the community
  • Provide evidence of your contribution to the wider community, with an emphasis on volunteer or community work

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed either through your study or activities you are involved in outside of study
  • Provide an example of your leadership story

Criterion 4: Ability to Represent Victoria

  • Describe how you would be an effective advocate for Victoria
  • Any messages you might have that could encourage others who are interested in Studying in Victoria.

In your application, you also need to include:

International Student of the Year – Higher Education

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework based program at a Victorian education provider, has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to the internationalisation of their institution and the broader Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

International Student of the Year – Research

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an international student who has been pursuing a postgraduate research program either at Masters (by Research) or Doctoral level, has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and has contributed to the internationalisation of their institution and the broader Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying at a Victorian education provider outside the Melbourne metropolitan area, who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to the internationalisation of their institution and the regional Victorian community.

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled as an international student in a course at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

International Alumnus of the Year

About this Award

This Award will be presented to an alumnus of a Victorian educational institution who studied as an international student and has used their student experience and education to maintain links and create benefits to Victoria through business, volunteering or community networks.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Have enrolled as an international student at a Victorian education provider
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Post-study Involvement and Contribution to promote Victoria

  • Description of your post-study contribution to industry, academia or research, with a focus on outcomes and innovation
  • Description of your post-study involvement and contribution to promote Victoria and your institution
  • Description of your involvement and achievements in the alumnus activities

Criterion 2: Leadership Skills

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have applied to your post-study journey
  • Provide an example of your leadership story

  • Any messages you might have that could encourage others who are interested in Studying in Victoria.

In your application, you also need to include:

  • Names and contact details of two referees who agree to be contacted to provide further information on the nomination; and
  • A photo and permission for it to be used for marketing purposes

Victorian Student of the Year – Internationalisation

About this Award

This Award will be presented to a domestic student studying an accredited course at a Victorian education provider who has:

  • actively and effectively supported the engagement of international students with the broader Victorian community, and
  • a practical idea to further promote and foster integration and connections between the domestic and international student communities.
  • The winner in this category will receive a prize of $5,000 towards their studies and $5,000 towards their proposed international student experience or activity.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited course at a Victorian education provider (not as an international student)
  • Agree to act as an advocate for the awards, Study Melbourne and Victorian International Education, supporting Study Melbourne marketing activities as required
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Academic Participation

  • Description of your studies and academic achievements to date

[Applicants are encouraged to upload supporting documents such as curriculum vitae (CV), academic transcripts and any other relevant documents.]

Criterion 2: Demonstrated contribution and connection to the Victorian and global communities.

  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have enhanced the international student experience by connecting them with the Victorian community.

Criterion 3: Capacity to act as an inspirational role model for other students and the Victorian community

  • Explain why you feel you would be considered for the Victorian Student of the Year – Internationalisation award. Please consider your personal and community achievements as a global citizen.
  • Provide a brief proposal (250 words) for an experience or activity that would connect international students to the broader community and how you would use $5,000 funding to make this idea happen.

In your application, you also need to include:

  • Names and contact details of two referees who agree to be contacted to provide further information on the nomination; and

A photo and permission for it to be used for marketing purposes

The Provider Awards will feature the following awards:

Excellence in International Education - TAFE

Excellence in International Education - University

Excellence in International Education – TAFE

About this Award

This award will be presented to a Victorian TAFE provider that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a TAFE experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider (CRICOS number is required);
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

  • Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance in areas such as, but not limited to:
  • Teaching delivery
  • Industry engagement
  • Student experience (including connecting international students with domestic students and/or local communities through their studies)
  • Student employability
  • Alumni relations

(Data and statements from relevant stakeholders can be included to assist in answering this question).

Criterion 2: Demonstrated outcomes which contribute to the Victorian international education sector

  • Please describe your strategy and methodology in delivering education to international students.

Criterion 3: Demonstrated innovation which contributes to the Victorian international education sector

  • How is your performance innovative and what makes your institution stand out from the crowd?

Excellence in International Education – University

About this Award

This award will be presented to a Victorian university that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a university experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, a university must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legislated by the Victorian Government to operate as a university in Victoria;
  • A university may have operations and activities in more than one State, however, only the operation and activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

  • Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance in areas such as, but not limited to:
  • Teaching delivery
  • Research
  • Student experience (including connecting international students with domestic students and/or local communities through their studies)
  • Alumni relation
  • Student employability

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

(Note: eligibility will include consideration where required that the institution is CRICOS registered and has no adverse findings held against it by relevant regulators).

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance in areas such as, but not limited to:
  • Teaching delivery
  • Student experience and engagement (including connecting international students with local communities through their studies)
  • Curriculum design
  • Alumni relations

This award will be presented to a Victorian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a private RTO experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

(Note: this will include consideration where required that the institution is CRICOS registered and has no adverse findings held against it by relevant regulators).

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance in areas such as, but not limited to:

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in enhancing the experience of international students beyond academic support, or providing opportunities for broader awareness of the value international students bring to Victorian communities, or engagement with the Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations and services for international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of the service

  • How do you identify student needs and expectations, and use this to enhance the experience of international students?
  • How do you demonstrate excellence in the delivery of service?
  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance.

Criterion 2: Demonstrated innovation which enhances the experience of international students in Victoria

  • Please describe any innovative initiative(s) that you have implemented to enhance the experience of international students in Victoria?

Criterion 3:  Demonstrated outcomes which enhance the experience of international students in Victoria

Excellence in International Student Employability and Career Development

About this Award

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated excellence or innovation in employability and careers services to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations that service international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of the service

  • How do you identify student needs and expectations, and use this to enhance the experience of international students?
  • How do you demonstrate excellence in the delivery of service?
  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance.

Criterion 2: Demonstrated innovation which has enhanced employability and career development of international students in Victoria

  • Please describe any innovative initiative(s) that you have implemented to improve employability and career development for international students in Victoria?
  • Please describe your strategy and methodology in delivering the initiative(s), and describe how this is innovative?

Criterion 3: Demonstrated outcomes which enhance employability and career development of international students in Victoria

  • How has the excellent service provided or initiative(s) enhanced the employability and career development of international students in Victoria?
  • What were the impacts of this service or initiative(s) in improving the employability and career development of international students in Victoria?
  • In what ways have international students in Victoria been provided with opportunities that enhance their employability and career development?

Excellence in Innovation in Partnerships and International Engagement

About this Award

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in collaborative international partnerships, that benefits the education sector.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legally constituted or appropriately accredited education provider (CRICOS number is not required);
  • Organisations may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the collaborative international partnerships of the organisation in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Excellence in development and conduct of the international partnership

  • Please provide details of the collaborative international partnership you have undertaken.
  • How have you demonstrated excellence in developing and conducting the partnership?
  • Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance.

Criterion 2: Demonstrate excellence in innovation through the delivery of the collaborative international partnership

  • Please describe how the collaborative international partnership demonstrates innovation excellence that benefits the education sector?

Criterion 3: Demonstrate outcomes delivered through the collaborative international partnership

  • Describe the outcomes delivered and explain why they demonstrate excellence.
  • Describe how reciprocal outcomes have been measured and evaluated.

Premier's Awards

In addition, the Premier’s Awards will recognise an overall International Student of the Year and International Education/Service Provider. Nominees for other awards automatically become nominees for the Premier's awards so these awards require no additional nomination.

Recipients of the Student Awards will also help promote the State as a leading international student destination.

Award Amounts

International Student Award winners, with the exception of the International Alumnus of the Year, are awarded up to $10,000 to contribute to their study at an educational institution in Victoria, while the recipient of the ‘Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year’ receives an additional $10,000 towards their studies.
