Ana Sanchez's story

Ana Sanchez’ home town is the bustling Colombian city of Cali, known for its passion for sport and salsa dancing. Cali may be on the other side of the South Pacific Ocean, but for Ana homesickness hasn’t been a problem.

Melbourne is a city of diversity

Ana has quickly settled into what she calls the most multicultural city she’s ever encountered, and has made great friends from around the world.

‘The thing I love the most about living in Melbourne is the multiculturalism. I’ve never experienced anything like this. The city is a melting pot of all different kinds of cultures and traditions. Melbourne is the whole world, in one city!’ says Ana.

She’s about to complete an advanced level certificate in English and has loved every moment of her time in Melbourne. Before arriving in Australia, she spent considerable time researching suitable destinations.

Melbourne has it all – educational opportunities, nature, vibrant, safe

‘For me it was really important to study in a city that had a mix of great educational opportunities, beautiful nature experiences as well as a vibrant, safe community for young people. Melbourne ticked all those boxes and more.’

Make friends from around the world

Ana has dramatically improved her English. She has also spent time exploring the city and Victoria – and made friends from around the world. The fact that the city is home to students and workers from many countries made Ana feel welcome and quickly at home.

‘I’m so glad I chose Melbourne. It’s just been wonderful! I have met so many people from so many different places, I have tasted amazing food and experienced the most breathtaking scenery. Melbourne is a place where it is almost impossible to get bored.’

When asked about any advice for students considering Melbourne, she doesn’t hesitate:

‘Just come! You won’t regret it. The hardest thing about being in Melbourne is knowing that it’s not forever. If you do come, I hope that you make an effort to make every single day special and interesting, soaking up all that the city has to offer.’
