Chenkai is studying a PhD at the University of Melbourne, investigating non-invasive brain cancer diagnosis. His research has been published and presented in journals and conferences including at the Asian Society for Neuro-Oncology annual meeting and for the Australia Society for Medical Re-search Victoria annual conference.

He has been awarded a Freemasons Victoria Lodge of Australia Felix Cancer Research grant, a Melbourne International Research Scholarship, as well as a Nick Christopher Top-up Scholarship, granted to the best PhD students in Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Chenkai volunteers for the Chinese Association of Professional Scholars (CAPS) - promoting Chinese students to study in Melbourne - and for ResBaz, a program to support student research.
