The Study Melbourne Career Catalyst scholarship awards 15 talented international students with enrolment into the Work Readiness Program. This valuable program contains all the components you need to feel prepared for the real-world career environment, providing vital hands-on experience within an Australian business and in-turn enhancing your experience, skillset and career understanding.

As part of the Work Readiness Program, scholarship recipients will receive:

  • Nationally recognised unit of competency that provides the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in business environments (BSBOPS201 Work effectively in business environments)
  • 12-week part-time unpaid internship with an Australian business in your field of study*
  • Access to Outcome. Academy – Interpersonal and technical up-skilling programs
  • 1-on-1 career coaching session (resume and LinkedIn review)
  • Dedicated InternMatch Placement Consultant to assist you on your internship journey.

This learning content coupled with a 12-week part time internship will allow you to walk away from the program with the experience you need to kick-start your career.

*While we attempt to secure an internship to match your field of study, it might vary subjecting to the availability of hosting companies. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer medical and teaching internships as part of the Work Readiness Program.

How to apply

  • Record a short video of yourself answering the following questions
    • How will this Work Readiness Program including the internship kick off your career?
    • What skills and attributes will you bring to your internship that will set you apart? Use specific examples if possible.
    • What skills and experience do you believe you will gain from the program and the internship?
  • Video must not be longer than 6 minutes (~ 2 minutes per question)

Eligibility criteria

The Study Melbourne Career Catalyst Scholarship is only available to international students, currently studying or recently graduated (within the last 2 years) with a Victorian education provider. The student must be in Victoria.

The applicant must have registered for and attended, at least one Career Catalyst in-person event or Career Catalyst webinar, between 13 February 2024 and Tuesday 30 April 2024.

Applications must meet the above criteria and will be assessed based on their application submission response.

Applicants must be available to complete a 12-week internship part-time remote/in-person/hybrid otherwise they will forgo this opportunity and it will be offered to the next successful student.

What is an internship?

An internship is essentially a way to help a student transition from study to work. It is an incredibly powerful way for students and graduates to apply their learning and gain an understanding of what is needed in the working world.

Internships allow students and graduates to further develop their skills and provide valuable experience that will assist in gaining meaningful employment in their field of study.

If you are new to Australia and are looking for a job, an internship can provide you with local, relevant experience that can help you differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Internships are 12-weeks which is usually 20 hours per week part-time if offered during a university semester, or full-time if offered during the holiday breaks. Our team will work with you to find a time that works with your schedule, to complete your internship.

*Scholarship recipients must have undertaken and finalised their internship by 30 June 2025. (Some exceptions might apply)

How long does it take to complete the Work Readiness Program?

On average, the learning content and Knowledge Assessments will take approximately 4 hours to complete.

Once you have completed the Knowledge Assessments, your dedicated InternMatch Placement Coordinator will contact you to start your internship placement process.

You will complete five assessments during your 12-week unpaid internship.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Statement of Attainment for BSBOPS201 Work effectively in business environments.

During the internship, you are required to complete one last module that is built around what you do and learn while on internship.

Once complete you will receive a unit of competency certificate for completing the program.

Is the internship component paid?

Internships as part of the Work Readiness Program are unpaid.

Depending on where you are looking to intern, globally, there are different rules and regulations. In Australia, Unpaid internships are legal only if they are part of a vocational placement as defined by the Fair Work Act 2009. Please see the Fair Work Australia website for more information on the rules around work experience and internships.

How do I record my video to submit?

You can record your short video application in a few different ways:

  1. Using the camera function on your smart phone
  1. Starting a meeting with yourself via Zoom, Teams or Google Meet and recording the meeting
  1. Applications such as Loom or Canva allow you to record yourself

You can then save and download your recording and upload the file via your online application form.
