In August 2021, the following projects were funded as part of the Study Melbourne Inclusion Program 2021 projects.
Melbourne IS Badminton 2.0
Melbourne IS Badminton 2.0 aims to deliver social networking opportunities with fellow international students through badminton sessions using a "coach & play" format.
Students are involved in the design and organisation through a buddy system.
The project also includes special Mini-Festivals such as a Badminton Tournament to bring together students in a friendly & inclusive environment and will develop their leadership and organisational skills.
Creativity for Wellbeing
The Creativity for Wellbeing Program is a series of workshops and full-day creativity events, plus an exhibition of student artwork for international students.
The goal is to provide experiences that enhance participants with an overall sense of wellbeing, grow confidence, and problem solving.
All workshops will follow CovidSafe practices.
Resilience Against Racism 2021
This project aims to support international students who may have experienced racism themselves or are a direct witness to racism.
The program includes workshops focusing on resilience against racism and micro-aggression in different settings relevant to all international students.
Sessions will be delivered either in-person or online to allow greater flexibility for student's access.
Deakin University - Warrnambool Campus
South West Victoria International Community Engagement Project
The project aims to offer regional international students an opportunity to remain connected during intra-trimester breaks and non-compulsory study periods.
The program will provide a platform for community members to connect with Deakin international students to build belonging, wellbeing and connections.
It includes a number of community activities such as bike education sessions, volunteer programs or 'Come and Try' recreational sports.
Federation University Australia
This program is a nutrition initiative, providing international students at each of Federation University's Ballarat, Berwick and Churchill campuses, as well as ACU international students with healthy cooking classes and nutrition workshops and webinars.
These will be delivered by nutrition experts and leverage existing Victorian Government food relief programs in the area to provide the necessary ingredients for students.
Filipino Community Council of Vic Inc
Intensified and Targeted Welfare Support for International Students
This project aims to engage a bi-cultural worker to support Filipino international students experiencing difficulties in finding suitable employment, social isolation, mental health issues and other needed support.
Participants can also attend community information sessions (one per semester) to learn where to seek help and support, Covid-19 safety and vaccination information, and work rights information to avoid workplace exploitation.
Project SASS and Wellbeing
Project SASS (South Asian Student Support) and Wellbeing is designed to assist South Asian international students by delivering culturally appropriate services that promote knowledge concerning their rights, encourage social connections and develop employability.
The project involves the development of digital resources on social and emotional wellbeing and the delivery of a cultural competency training package.
Collected data is analysed for responses which will be shared with other universities.
WeHike consists of a series of guided hiking tours to several national parks in Victoria where participants will have the opportunity to explore more of the region, generate meaningful connections within the international student community and enjoy the mental and physical benefits of being in nature.
The walking tours will be open to international students from all education providers.
Confident Presenters Program
The Confident Presenters Program aims to build self-confidence skills, resilience, mental wellbeing and paths to employability. In addition, the activities also help improve students find their voice about a topic they are passionate about.
Upon completing the program, students will run their own public workshop and support each other through volunteering opportunities.
Learning and Life Centre (Huddle) Ltd
Welcome to AFL
The Huddle's Welcome to AFL includes three events providing international students with the opportunity to learn the basics of Australian Rules football.
The project provides an open, accepting and safe environment to learn fundamental skills before watching a game.
The program also includes a presentation on responsible gambling from the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation and other opportunities to volunteer.
Monash Sexual Health Collective
The project aims to create reliable and culturally appropriate online resources to address sexual and reproductive health tailored for international students.
The team will conduct focus groups with a diverse sample to determine the topics and format for the content on the channel. This will ensure the content is appropriate, informative, accessible and engaging to students from diverse backgrounds.
The project will contribute to increasing international students' awareness of their sexual and reproductive rights in Australia.
International Student Mental Health Peer Work Pilot
Orygen will partner with two higher education providers in Melbourne to pilot the implementation and delivery of international student mental health peer workers in education settings.
Education provider partners will employ the international student mental health peer workers and support the promotion and delivery of peer support to international students at their respective campuses.
Orygen will provide peer work implementation support, workforce training and ongoing supervision to both the education provider wellbeing team and the international student mental health peer workers.
Stem Sisters Vic Incorporated
STEM Sisters Ambassador Program
The STEM Sisters Ambassador Program aims to deliver essential skills training to female international STEM students who face challenges because of a specific gender and cultural barriers.
STEM Sisters will identify training needs and deliver five sessions in collaboration with industry partners, both online and offline.
The project also includes sessions with the 'Women in STEM' club across three partner universities.
Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine
Supporting international student safety and encouraging community inclusion
The project includes water safety and social inclusion, providing an enhanced experience for international students in Geelong.
International students will participate in swimming lessons, a surf education and experience program through a local surf life-saving club, and social media campaign.
The establishment of the Barwon Rotaract Club will also provide a valuable opportunity for students to engage in local community activities.
UNITED- Spanish Latin American Welfare Centre
United in Wellbeing
This project aims to support the wellbeing of international students of Spanish and Latin American backgrounds residing in Victoria.
UNITED volunteers and staff will assist students in understanding Australia's systems and other essential services.
The peer support system will help tackle loneliness and social isolation, providing mental health support for international students.
