Tell us a little bit about yourself and your achievements to date

I am undertaking a Bachelor of Arts and majoring in Politics and International Studies at the University of Melbourne. I founded a not-for-profit organisation called ‘Glass Jar’and have previously worked with UNICEF. Presently, I serve as the Secretary of the Melbourne United Nations Society and I’m interning at the Australian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria.

What are your goals for the future?

My paramount goal for the future is to become (or at least try to become) the person who I never had to look up to while I was growing up. Having an intersectional identity of being queer and South Asian, this idea becomes very cardinal to me. Further, I hope to undertake a Juris Doctor after I finish my bachelor’s degree.

Why are you excited about being a Study Melbourne Student Ambassador?

As an Ambassador, I am excited to join a cohort of extremely talented minds who come from different backgrounds and are as passionate as me to learn, grow and develop. I look forward to working for the welfare of the international student community and becoming a better Victorian.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to supporting other international students?

In supporting other international students, I am most passionate about raising a voice on issues around the struggles of identity and cultural assimilation. This involves dealing with sensitive – but important – themes like racism, colourism, white privilege, homophobia, social conformity and mental health. Additionally, I am very interested in assisting international students with their academic challenges and university navigation.

What are your tips for students who have just arrived in Melbourne?

Never lose two very important traits: strength and courage. If you face injustice, speak up loudly and boldly. You deserve everything. There will be many instances when you will lose faith in yourself and you might want to go back. That will be your test. Keep hustling. Keep fighting. We are with you.
