On 7 July 2020, Study Melbourne Student Ambassadors from a range of different backgrounds, came together with other community representatives to help film coronavirus (COVID-19) community health messages in over 20 languages.

The role of an Ambassador is to help create a rich and supportive community for current and prospective international students and develop valuable leadership skills.

With the recent high numbers of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported and both metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire back in Stage 3 restrictions, Study Melbourne Ambassadors saw the opportunity to provide an important reminder of how we can protect ourselves and each other from the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Student Ambassador Devendra Singh recognises in times of high anxiety, such as a pandemic, people need to be able to turn to trusted sources of information which ‘provide that much needed personal touch.’

‘I have benefitted a lot in terms of skills and experience, and I wanted to have a platform to give back to society. Filming the message and communicating the same seemed to be the best way possible to give back to society during such hard times.’

Fellow Ambassador Jessica Santos, who filmed in Spanish, reiterates ‘it’s important to reach every student and tell them Estamos En Esto Juntos’ (we are all in this together).

Key messaging includes:

If you’re in a restricted area, you must stay home. There are only four reasons to be out:

  • shopping for food and essential supplies
  • medical care and caregiving
  • exercise
  • and work and study if you can’t do it from home.

There are three ways to stay safe

  • If you have symptoms, get tested and stay home until you get your result. You must stay home until the health department tells you it is OK. If this makes it hard to pay your bills and buy your food, help is available.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Stay 1.5m away from others. No hugs. No handshakes.
