Applications for the Victorian International Education Awards 2023 - NOW OPEN 

Applications open on Friday 14 April 2023, 12:01am AEST and close on Monday 5 June 2023, 11:59pm AEST.

We would like to celebrate you, the change-makers in our communities, at the Victorian International Education Awards 2023.

These awards provide an opportunity to showcase and acknowledge impressive students, alumni and education providers who are working hard to champion international education in Victoria and across the globe.

If you are an international student or alumni who is proud of what you’ve achieved academically or have honed your leadership skills while in Australia or have regularly given back to the community to make a positive change then submit your application(s). There are a number of award categories with prizes of $6,000 for each Student Award (excluding the alumnus category) and additional $10,000 for the student winner of the Premier's Award.

If you are an education provider who has enhanced the experience of international students in Victoria, submit your application for one of the 9 provider award categories.

Student award categories

International Student of the Year – English Language Training

This Award will be presented to an international student who is studying an English Language course that runs for a minimum of 20 weeks. Students who have completed an English Language course and have continued their studies with a Victorian education provider can still apply.

This award recognises an international student who is a role model for others by displaying exemplary qualities such as leadership skills, outstanding achievements and has given their time in the areas of community service in English Language.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Community involvement (70%)

  • Demonstrate contribution and connection to the Victorian and global communities.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

Criterion 2: Academic achievements (30%)

*          Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.

*          Outline how your studies will assist you in achieving your career goals.

*          Include messages that could encourage others who are interested in studying in Victoria.

International Student of the Year – Higher Education

This Award will be presented to an international student who is currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework-based program at a Victorian education provider.

This award recognises an international student who is a role model for others by displaying exemplary qualities such as leadership skills, outstanding achievements and has given their time in the areas of community service in the Higher Education.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Community involvement (60%)

  • List the ways you contribute and connect to both the Victorian and global community - activities, events, actions, hobbies, clubs, etc, as well as how long you have been involved in each.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

Criterion 2: Leadership skills (30%)

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide one or more examples of how you have used your leadership skills to achieve particular outcomes.

International Student of the Year – Research

This Award will be presented to an international student who is pursuing a postgraduate research program either at Masters (by Research) or Doctoral level.

From immersing themselves in hands-on experiences in their field to adopting practical and innovative approaches to various industries, the winner of this award will demonstrate that they have broken new ground and made an impact in Victoria through their research.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Community involvement (60%)

  • List the ways you contribute and connect to both the Victorian and global community - activities, events, actions, hobbies, clubs, etc, as well as how long you have been involved in each.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

Criterion 2: Leadership skills (30%)

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide one or more examples of how you have used your leadership skills to achieve particular outcomes.

International Student of the Year – Regional

This Award will be presented to an international student who is currently studying at a Victorian education provider outside the Melbourne metropolitan area.

The recipient of this award will have embarked on an educational journey in regional Victoria, immersed themselves in the culture and lifestyle, and ultimately be an advocate for living and studying in the regions.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Community involvement (60%)

  • List the ways you contribute and connect to both your regional Victorian and global community - activities, events, actions, hobbies, clubs, etc, as well as how long you have been involved in each.
  • Provide examples of activities or actions where you believe you have added value to the regional Victorian community, global community and international student experiences.

Criterion 2: Leadership skills (30%)

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide an example of your leadership skills and outcomes you have achieved while in regional Victoria.

Criterion 3: Academic achievements (10%)

*          Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.

*          Outline how your studies will assist you in achieving your career goals.

*          Include messages that could encourage others who are interested in studying in Victoria.

International Student of the Year – Vocational Education and Training (VET)

This Award will be presented to an international student who is currently undertaking a VET course.

This award recognises an international student who is a role model for others by displaying exemplary qualities such as leadership skills, outstanding achievements and has given their time in the areas of community service in VET.

  • List the ways you contribute and connect to both the Victorian and global community - activities, events, actions, hobbies, clubs, etc, as well as how long you have been involved in each.

International Student of the Year – Internationalisation

This Award will be presented to a domestic student currently studying an accredited course at a Victorian education provider, who has actively and effectively supported the engagement of international students with the broader Victorian and/or global community.

International Alumnus of the Year

This Award will be presented to an alumnus of a Victorian educational institution who studied as an international student.

This award highlights the contributions that the winner has made after they have graduated from their institution, by utilising their expertise to contribute to the growth and development of Victoria.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Entrepreneurial, business and community engagement achievements (60%)

  • Describe your achievements and include recognition of entrepreneurial or innovative activity, and how you have created benefits to Victoria through business, volunteering or community networks.
  • Describe your involvement and contribution to promote Victoria and your institution.

Criterion 2: Leadership skills (30%)

  • Outline your leadership abilities and describe how they have developed through your studies or extra-curricular activities.
  • Provide one or more examples of how you have used your leadership skills to achieve particular outcomes.

Criterion 3: Academic achievements (10%)

*          Describe your studies and academic achievements to date.

*          Outline how your studies will assist you in achieving your career goals.

*          Include messages that could encourage others who are interested in studying in Victoria.

Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year

The Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year will recognise the most outstanding candidate for this year.

Nominees for other awards will automatically be considered as candidates, so this award does not require an application.

Recipients of the Premier’s Award will help promote Victoria as a leading international student destination.

Student award prizes

  • Award winners in each student category, with the exception of the International Alumnus of the Year, will be awarded $6,000 each to support their studies.
  • Up to two runners-up per student category will be awarded $2,000 each.
  • All finalists and winners will receive a certificate of recognition.
  • The recipient of the ‘Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year’ will receive an additional $10,000 to support their studies.

International students currently enrolled with a Victorian tertiary education institution are encouraged to apply.

Provider award categories

Excellence in International Student Experience

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit organisation that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in enhancing the experience of international students beyond academic support, providing opportunities for broader awareness of the value international students bring to Victorian communities, or creating opportunities for engagement of international students with the Victorian community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider, businesses or not-for-profit
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations and services for international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of the service

  • How did you identify student needs and expectations, and use this to enhance the experience of international students?
  • How did you demonstrate excellence in the delivery of service?
  • Please provide an example(s) of exceptional performance including any outcomes achieved.

Criterion 2: Demonstrated innovation which enhances the experience of international students in Victoria

  • Please describe any innovative initiative(s) you have implemented to enhance the experience of international students in Victoria during 2022 and/or 2023?

This award will be presented to a Victorian TAFE provider that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a TAFE experience to international students.

To be eligible for this Victorian International Education Award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited Victorian TAFE provider
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities delivered for Victorian-enrolled international students will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance in areas including, but not limited to:

This award will be presented to a private education provider that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery education and student experience to international students.

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Education providers may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the operation and training activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

(Note: this will include consideration where required that the institution is CRICOS registered and has no adverse findings held against it by relevant regulators.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

This award will be presented to a Victorian university that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of a university experience to international students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, a university must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legislated by the Victorian Government to operate as a university in Victoria (CRICOS number is required);
  • A university may have operations and activities in more than one State, however, only the operation and activities in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of international education

Please provide at least one example of exceptional performance in areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Teaching delivery
  • Research
  • Student experience (including connecting international students with domestic students and/or local communities through their studies)

Outstanding EdTech Provider of the Year

This award will be presented to an education technology (EdTech) company that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of digital learning and education innovation.

Applicants will be required to self-nominate, and will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must have been exporting or supporting international students for at least 3 years
  • The focus of the applicant’s activities must be the tertiary education sector.

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Viability, sustainability and growth potential of the business (10%)

  • Please outline your business’ strategy for growth, and outline how this is underpinned by a sound financial strategy.
  • Please provide examples of recent milestones in terms of exports, or success in international markets, in the current year.
  • Please detail the total export earnings of the business from overseas markets and note whether the business is accessing or intends to access a diverse range of export markets as part of its growth strategy.

Criterion 2: Leadership and innovation (40%)

  • Please outline the education problem that your business is addressing, and your business’ innovation credentials
  • Please outline how your business is demonstrating leadership in education technology or education innovation, and enhancing Victoria’s reputation as a high-quality education, training and research destination
  • Please outline the value or impact of any diversity and inclusion, sustainability and/or social impact strategies implemented within your business.

Criterion 3: Partnerships (20%)

  • Please detail any partnerships that your business has with local or international tertiary education providers, and outline how these partnerships are building dynamic cooperation between EdTech companies, educators and education institutions
  • Please outline how your products and services benefit international students and/or the internationalisation of education in Victoria (for example through capability development in partnership with offshore partners).

Criterion 4: Efficacy and outcomes (30%)

  • Does your business have a defined set of quantitative and qualitative metrics which document product efficacy?
  • To what extent can your business demonstrate that it has documented the impact of its services/EdTech tools on learners, including providing externally validated evidence if available?

Excellence in Innovation in Partnerships and International Engagement

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider, business or not-for-profit that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in collaborative international partnerships, that benefit the education sector.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legally constituted or appropriately accredited education provider, business or not-for-profit
  • Organisations may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the collaborative international partnerships of the organisation in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Criterion 1: Excellence in development and conduct of the international partnership

This award will be presented to a Victorian education provider that has demonstrated excellence or innovation in employability and careers services to international students.

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally constituted or an appropriately accredited education provider;
  • Organisations may have operations in more than one state, however, only the operations that service international students in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Criterion 1: Excellence in delivery of the service

International Student Employer of the Year

This award will be presented to a Victorian organisation that removes barriers to international student employment and celebrates international students’ career success in their fields of expertise.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this award, an organisation must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legally constituted or appropriately accredited education provider, business or not-for-profit
  • Organisations may have operations and training activities in more than one state, however, only the collaborative international partnerships of the organisation in Victoria will be considered; and
  • Agree to the full terms and conditions

Assessment criteria

Criterion 1: Demonstrated on-going effort in addressing barriers to international student and graduate employment in Australia (50%)

  • How have you improved your recruitment practice to enable equal employment opportunities for international students and graduates?
  • How have you overcome the challenges in employing international students and graduates?
  • What has been the impact of your initiatives/changes? Please provide examples.

Criterion 2: Demonstrated effort in employing more international students and graduates in their fields of expertise (30%)

  • Please provide examples of your progress in providing employment opportunities for international students and graduates in their study fields (including full-time, part-time, casual positions as well as work-integrated-learning experiences).
  • Please describe the strategies you use to actively attract and retain talented international students and graduates in your organisation.

Criterion 3: Demonstrated effort in promoting international student success (10%)

Premier’s Award – International Provider of the Year

In addition, there will be a Premier’s Award who will be recognised as the most outstanding Provider for this Year.

Nominees for other awards will automatically be considered as candidates, so this award does not require additional nomination.

Provider award prizes

There are nine Provider Awards that institutions can apply for.

Award winners are awarded with a trophy and provided with an email signature banner, to include on all their emails promoting that they are a winner in the Victorian International Education Awards.

The recipient of the Premier’s Award – International Provider of the Year will receive a trophy and will be recognised as the most outstanding Provider of this Year.

How do I apply online?

To apply, you will need to register online and submit your application and supporting materials. You can submit one entry per category.

Applications close on Monday 5 June 2023 at 11:59pm.

What documents do I need to apply?

Documents needed:

  • a written submission of how you meet the assessment criteria for each category you are applying for (we recommend you write about 800-1,200 words per criterion with each point per criterion a maximum of 400 words).
  • two referees who agree to be contacted for further information if needed - we will need their names and contact details.
  • students only - a headshot photograph to use for Study Melbourne’s marketing purposes.

What supporting materials can I upload?

You are encouraged to submit any relevant documents that demonstrate how you meet the assessment criteria. Click on the relevant award category to find out what documents are required.

These can include.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume, academic transcripts and certificates.
  • These should be from the last five years.
  • You can submit up to five documents.
  • The maximum size allowed for each document is 5MB.
  • You can combine supporting material to create one document—for instance, compile multiple images into one PDF file.
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) (mandatory)
  • Copy of your student visa (mandatory)
