I got to experience the practical implementation of the theory taught. Working within Australia’s national science research agency as part of my thesis was incredible and ultimately gave me the experience and confidence to start my own business.

Sukan Krishna Sundararajan had already completed a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in his home country of India when he arrived in Melbourne, ready to further his studies with a Master of Science of Advanced Manufacturing Technology at Swinburne University of Technology.

He had heard wonderful things about the city and study environment but says that the reality far exceeded his expectations. With the help from his new network, he found a place to live in the city he says, “has perfect weather conditions, great infrastructure and a fantastic student environment,” and soon found himself immersed in a rich learning environment.

“My learning was non-stop during my time in Melbourne. Our lecturers were incredibly knowledgeable and had real-world experience, challenging us to understand how theory is implemented through continuous assessments and with a lot of self-learning tools.

“Coming from an environment where the focus was on theory and listening to an environment where we could challenge concepts, test ideas and broaden our perspectives through understanding different ways to approach challenges has made a huge impact on me. It has made me a smarter and more rounded professional,” says Sukan.

He made the most of the opportunities presented and took on a Post Graduate Research Assistant role with Australia’s national science research agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) as part of completing his thesis.

“As a Post Graduate Research Assistant, I was surrounded by cutting edge technology and working with some of the most brilliant minds.  I worked under the supervision of research team leaders and performed experimental trials with laser assisted machining with efficient process parameters.

“I learnt so much about programming, developing innovative manufacturing processes, increasing efficiency, streamlining workflow and designing testing methods during my time at CSIRO. These are all learnings I wouldn’t have had in a more traditional study environment,” explains Sukan.

Now back in India, he’s the Co-founder of Seer Inkling Technologies, a business that specialises in helping manufacturers innovate and increase efficiencies – all the things he learnt as a student in Melbourne.

“Studying in Victoria and living in a different country surrounded by people from around the world has shaped who I am today. I am now a creative thinker and much more confident in making bold decisions.

“The interactions with students, lecturers and all those people I met outside of university through everyday living has refined how I interact with others, including making my interaction with my clients more professional. It’s given me perspective and the ability to listen and convey information in a different way. It’s made me a team player,” he says.

Sukan is focused on building his business, ultimately hoping to become a leader in the virtual reality and augmented reality industry. While he has his eyes firmly on his goal, he is keen to stress that life is not all about work and that students should remember that.

“If you are lucky enough to have the experience of studying in Melbourne, please remember that part of your experience is also belonging to a new community. Don’t try to work fulltime while studying, but rather make sure you give your studies enough attention and also benefit from all the other wonderful opportunities and experiences that are waiting for you.

Melbourne is a great city. I can’t think of a better place to study. Enjoy it!
