Tell us a bit about yourself and your achievements to date

Hello! I’m Niamh and I have just commenced my third year studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in pure mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in linguistics. I spend a lot of my free time with friends experiencing the local bars and restaurants, or the various events constantly happening around Melbourne.

What are your goals for the future?

I am trying to keep my studies as broad as possible as there is still so much I would like to study. However, some of my key interests for future pursuit are journalism and economics. Both are becoming increasingly globalised and would allow me to adopt an interdisciplinary approach.

Why are you excited about being a Study Melbourne Student Ambassador?

I am thrilled to be a Study Melbourne Student Ambassador and to be able to share my hometown with students from around the world. Melbourne is a melting pot of different cultures so I hope to hear more about the diverse range of students Melbourne brings together.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to supporting other international students?

I am most passionate about accessibility to mental health services for international students. Specifically, catering to differences in experiences that international students may face during their time in Melbourne and addressing the different perceptions and stigmas around mental health that others may have.

What is the most useful advice you ever received when you faced a challenging time as an international student?

While not necessarily advice that I have received, I learnt while studying abroad that building a strong network of peers who are going through similar experiences can be extremely rewarding and helpful. It can be quite difficult to navigate a vastly different culture and new environment.
