Released: 16 August 2022

The new 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranking was released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which named the University of Melbourne the number one university in Australia and 32nd in the world.

Launched in 2003, the ARWU ranks more than 1,200 universities using six indicators, including number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, and the number of articles published in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature and Science.

University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Jim McCluskey said the ranking was testament to staff.

The ARWU ranking particularly reflects the world-leading research that is conducted across the University and by our partners, forming a strong foundation for our teaching and education programs as well as the translational outcomes that benefit society. - Professor McCluskey

Two Victorian universities were named in the top 100 and five Victorian universities were named in the top 500.
